Fiction Writers on HubPages

By Website Examiner

If you enjoy fiction, chances are that you have come across a few fiction writers here on HubPages and read some of their stories. I have oftentimes been wondering: On this commercially and practically oriented site, how many true fiction writers are there?

The hubbers mentioned in the following all have in common that they have devoted a significant part of their time to writing and publishing stories, or at least made a serious attempt at writing some pretty good fiction.

Fiction Factory

This author’s collective joined HubPages 5 months ago. As the name suggests, Fiction Factory deals exclusively in fiction stories and in productivity tools for authors. There are currently 35 hubs, of which about 30 are short stories, the remaining are advisories and essays about literary agents, copyright protection, writing techniques etc.. The writer’s collective welcomes new authors, and also offers various services such as editing, proofreading, and mentoring.

Shadesbreath

This author, who has been on HubPages for 2 years and has no fewer than 802 followers, describes himself as a “fantasy, fiction and science fiction writer,” even though the admits to writing other things for financial reasons. He has been viewed on the forums discussing his forthcoming novel, which supposedly is his third, and is believed to have been published in one format or another. He has written some hubs with advice for aspiring novelists and some literary reviews as well.

Camlo

This Briton, who currently resides in Germany, came to HubPages 6 months and has published 6 short stories and 4 essays on songs and music. On his profile page, he describes himself as someone with “a warped sense of humor,” which may well be present in his fiction. But we’ve often come across him on the forums, where he debates with candor, sincerity, and oftentimes passion.

Roman Trend

This fellow is related to Fiction Factory. He has been on HubPages for 2 months and published 20 hubs, virtually all of them short stories or novella chapters. Roman Trend’s most recent story was a 10-hubs long sordid affair about a twisted love relationship quite many years ago.

Aguasilver

This hubber came to HubPages 9 months ago. One does not find many pieces of fiction among his 92 hubs, but one – “Letter from Berith to a minor demon” – is a work so outstanding that it suffices to make him an accomplished fiction writer as far as I am concerned. Aquasilver’s trip into the dark world is complex in form and substance, but most eloquently presented.

Merlin Fraser

The Scottish novelist, who came to HubPages 2 months ago, has written 15 hubs, several of which include advice to writers seeking publication. Four of the hubs are reviews and discussions of Inner Space trilogy, and his latest hub takes a more detached view upon the paranormal.

Other suggestions?

Admittedly, this presentation is merely be a limited sample of all the serious fiction writers on HubPages. I will be happy to consider including other authors upon request.

If Shadesbreath, with his immense talent, cannot make it and is not grabbed and signed up with solid exclusivity agreements by the publishers, what hope is there for anyone else to succeed? :-)

De Greek, that is a good question. I do not know him as a novelist, but he seems confident in what he is doing. I'm sure he will make it someday, as will quite a few others. Personally, I don't share the prevailing pessimism about the literary marketplace, it is just that writing is so much more fun than sending out self-adressed stamped envelopes.

I suggest you check out fellow hubber Lynda Martin and see to what length she has gone to get her trilogy of novels published, involving trial readers and what-not.

Well Dobson, I agree that it turns out there are a lot of good and promising fiction writers here; am still learning about new ones. I will definitely check out the author you mentioned, and if you have fiction posted chances are that I'll be reading that as well. Thanks for commenting.

For the record, my first novel was so awful I realized it was horrendous and stopped sending it out. My second was hardly better. I rewrote it from scratch, changing tons and it became my third, which I have been sending out since (two years now - sigh). So, in short, no published novels. Any confidence I exude on the novel writing front comes merely from being able to get them written, so I try to help people find that discipline where I can in that regard. But, like you, I don't share the prevailing pessimistic view on the marketplace either. It is hard to get published, but it's totally possible. I have had a couple of query letters turn into requests for chapters or manuscripts. So, you know, you keep getting closer if you keep trying. It takes up to six months to get rejected, so, you can only submit so many so fast. The more you write AND FINISH, the more you have out there working for you, increasing your chances.

Shadesbreath, I appreciate your informative comment, which can help myself and others fill out some of the blanks. Many authors have the tendency to drift onto new projects instead of following through on the tedious submission and revision process; seems almost like the creative genes and the practical ones are incompatible. Personally, I am all for collaborating with authors on editing, critique, and the submission process itself. Automated submission services are worthless, it takes finesse and diligence, but authors can help one another get that done.

Thanks also for being an inspiration to many and an important part of this vibrant literary community.

Hiya WE,

I wanted to thank you for hooking me up with all this sweet fiction action! I am here exclusively for fiction, both reading and writing, and I can't wait to look into each one of these writers.

~AC

PS: The review of Dobson's serial looks great!~ I can't thank you enough for putting links to my writing on your hub!

Hello AC, it is good to come across a true fiction writer - there are only a few of those around here. Maybe you will learn something, and I will certainly look forward to reading your stories. It has been a pleasure working with you, let's look forward to what comes next. Thanks.

Hi Website Examiner!

I had no idea this Hub existed, and it's purely by chance that I just found it.

I've read the work of the authors you mention here, plus more HP fiction writers, and to my judgement, there really is a lot of talent here.

Thank you very much for including me with some of the best. A great compliment!

All the best, Camlo

Thanks Camlo, I am glad that you have found this hub then. I should have notified you sooner, but maybe thought that would have been immodest. You richly deserve being included here. I am interested in your writing, which I find original and valuable. Thanks, W.E.

Hi, it is rather nice of you to make a hub about other hubs. Very thoughtful indeed.

My knack for writing started from fiction and over time has evolved into almost everything and anything that inspires me.

I do hope, you get the time and see my little fictious ramblings, I would very much like you to comment, since from what I know, you are quite a humble and modest expert. :P

Hi Website Examiner. My name is Daniel Simone and I'm a new member of this wonderful website, HUBPAGES. I'm a novelist who specializes in the narrative non-fiction genre`. Sounds like an oxymoron, but it's a tactic that dramatizes and enlivens a true event that may otherwise be rather dull and boring. I'm currently writing two books, which both are about very high profile crimes. One such project is the story of the famous Lufthansa Heist of 1978 at Kennedy Airport, the largest cash haul in history. Mr. Henry Hill, the true-life organizer of the robbery, is my collaborator on this venture. His life and criminal career was portryaed by the actor, Ray Liotta, in the film, Goodfellas. I write for several print publications and am the celebrity correspondent for two monthly magazines with substantial circulations in the New York area. I invite you and the other members of this cyberspace community to read my short stories. I would appreciate all constructive comments--bad and good.

Thank you Maggie-May, I am thrilled to see you here. I wrote this hub quite some time ago, and the changes in my outlook since then have been profound. There are many good writers on the site, the only issue is how best to help one another along. Best wishes, W.E.

Hello WE, I have been browsing today and fell onto this hub quite by accident. I am getting a little confused with all the different sites you have at the moment. I received a comment from another hubber about your fiction story club, would this be it? Working alongside you has helped me so much that I can not begin to describe how grateful I am. If there are any more of your sites that I could benefit from joining, could you kindly point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Hello Blue Star: I currently have two sites, so to speak, related to HubPages: the Fiction Readers Club and the private network. I have various ad hoc programs, but you have already enrolled to the extent it is meaningful to do so at this point.

The current hub may have mentioned the network; however, the members have changed over time, and this hub was written some time ago.

Here is the link for the Fiction Readers Club, thanks for your enrollment:
