Personal Reflections

Creative writings

I am standing at the water’s edge looking at an ocean that is still and chill. A faint wind embraces my face, bringing a tear to my eye. As I turn my head, seagulls are making headway close to the water’s surface; some landing, others taking off. They are the Plain Fowls, nothing extraordinary or even handsome about them, but they sure know how to live and survive.

Daytona, my dog, has taken off on its own, running way down the beach. It had a stick in its mouth the last time I saw it. Did I say “fetch!”? If so, I’ve been overruled by deep-seated passions that should only serve to remind me of my own hunger. She knows this area better than most; there is only a network of little paths and bushes separating our cabin from the ocean-side – no traffic to worry about. I could go to sleep and not worry, surely I’d find Daytona sleeping out on the front porch in the morning.

“Oh there she is!” I almost shout, and Daytona isn’t what I have in mind. This little fishing boat out there has kept me spellbound for what seems like hours as of late. It keeps emerging from the early morning fog, looking like it doesn’t belong. I’ve checked with everyone back at the harbor, and she positively hasn’t anchored there or made her presence known. A ghost ship? A spy ship? What is there even to catch so close to the shore? She cannot be out further than one mile.

Pondering to go back to the cabin to fetch my binoculars, I am distracted by a loud sound. Well, it is faint because of the distance, but nonetheless intrusive because of its aggressive tone. A huge transport vessel seems to be in the same lane as this obscure fishing boat, and the larger vessel wants her to get out of its way. Like now! “Whooooom! Whooooooom!”

Novelty Fiction

Yesterday, I was busy working on the online bookstore, which is open to all published and self-published authors. I also created this feedback form to easily sign up for Novelty Fiction’s free services.

Crossing my Mind

Libido is the gift that keeps giving. It is the master. But not the only master, as the other ones – like sleepiness, hunger, and the urge to suddenly use one’s muscles by lifting someone or even jumping up and down, dancing, or hugging a complete stranger also demand their share. Rational as we may try to be, we are learning to deal with the sensual being inside of us. Once mastered, once satisfied, we can move forward in harmony and balance.

It is interesting to see how people approach their goals in different ways. I find the possibilities for self-publishing books and e-books overwhelming. Some people seem to be like fish in the water, promoting themselves with ease; others just put their wares out there, then let people find these works themselves. I wonder how much (or how little) anyone is selling.

It is my Today’s Theory that most self-published authors and many published authors can benefit from having an agent or literary representative to look out for their interests on a daily basis.

At least, the technology appears to be working. It is astonishing how someone apparently has always thought of everything. With all these machines and tools at our fingertips, many of them free, how can we get the devices to work to our advantage, as opposed to getting absorbed or even crushed by them?

Gotta love this song!

I like your thoughts on self-publishing. It's hard for the reader to separate the wheat from the chaff. There's a lot of good stuff out there--also a lot of junk. The way it's presented it's very hard to get to the good stuff without wading through a bunch of junk.

Thanks, Paradise. I'm sure what you are saying is true. These days, many online stores have previews, which may help. As for reviews, it can be hard to distinguish between the genuine ones and the "plastic reviews" made by friends and supporters. Self-publishing has reputation issues. I also notice that some authors will happily sell works that are full of errors. Good points, I appreciate that.

Interesting Hub. I like your beach walk scenery, something I also enjoy doing. Your observations on self-publishing are right-on. I'm just starting with Kindle and exploring CreateSpace.

Many thanks, FGual. I am glad that you could relate to some of my writings. Exploring such options is very interesting, and I hope it works out for you.

Hi WE, enjoyed your musings. As to desires, I think a kind of ju-jitsu may be the proper way to deal with them--use the power of the desire to propel you toward your goal.

Just a thought. =:)

Acaetnna, I thank you for reading these random thoughts. My idea was that it could be interesting to try to express oneself in a different tone and format than usual; just a mix of ideas as they crossed my mind at that particular moment.

Winsome, thanks for your constructive ideas. I recently wrote a hub on libertinism, which also emphasizes the sensual element (in theory) but a more cultivated approach in practice. Without desires and drives, not much creative writing would get done, I believe.

Hi ~ Having an agent who knows the ropes and has many connections to reach the broadest reach would be the best idea if you can afford it. Otherwise, you may have so many friends willing to help promote your E-book that you might reach success. Blessings, Debby

Thank you, Debby. I am not primarily concerned with my own work; more with the situation for new authors in general. This hub was written in conjunction with that I set up a new online bookstore for Hubbers, in part in response to the situation as I have described it here. And I fully agree: A literary agent, literary representative or publicist is a huge help for any published author seeking to reach a large market. The whole point is that publicity is free but effective, whereas advertising is costly and not always that effective. Best wishes, W.E.
